چکیده

Here is a rough sketch of what I take to be an attractive, albeit naı̈ve, picture (its attractiveness I take to be obvious; its naiveté, though perhaps also obvious, will be discussed shortly). A primary purpose of a semantics for a natural language is to compositionally assign to sentences semantic values that determine whether the sentences are true or false. Since natural languages contain contextually sensitive expressions, semantic values must be assigned to sentences relative to contexts. These semantic values are propositions. Sentence types may also be associated with higher level semantic values that are or determine functions from contexts to propositions (something like what David Kaplan calls ‘‘character’’). Propositions are the primary bearers of truth and falsity. Propositions are also the objects of our attitudes: they are things we doubt, believe, and think. Further, sentences that contain verbs of propositional attitude, such as

Tense - Aspect acquisition meets typology

Throughout this paper, the semantic domain under scrutiny will be designated by the acronym ATAM (i.e., Actionality / Temporality / Aspect / Modality). This involves a modification of the usual practice, where TAM (or TMA) is routinely used. As will soon become clear, however, the actionality category cannot be neglected, considering its role in the semantics and acquisition of tense and aspect...

Buy one get one free: Distant annotation of Chinese tense, event type and modality

We describe a “distant annotation” method where we mark up the semantic tense, event type, and modality of Chinese events via a word-aligned parallel corpus. We first map Chinese verbs to their English counterparts via word alignment, and then annotate the resulting English text spans with coarse-grained categories for semantic tense, event type, and modality that we believe apply to both Engli...

Lexical Semantics and Selection of TAM in Bantu Languages: A Case of Semantic Classification of Kiswahili Verbs

The existing literature on Bantu verbal semantics demonstrated that inherent semantic content of verbs pairs directly with the selection of tense, aspect and modality formatives in Bantu languages like Chasu, Lucazi, Lusamia, and Shiyeyi. Thus, the gist of this paper is the articulation of semantic classification of verbs in Kiswahili based on the selection of TAM types. This is because the sem...
